Conquest's Philosophy is one of
dedication to the Working Terrier,
as it's creator intended.
My
passion for these little/big dogs called Jack Russell Terriers began in
the winter of 1983, in Orlando, Florida where I was helping at a
large Standardbred Training Centre, "The Ben White Raceway". This is
where I met two Jack Russell Terriers (JRTs) and their owners. JRTs were
very uncommon in those days. Being a lover of large dogs, I was not
immediately taken with these downsized busy, intelligent dogs. It took
living with one of these little bundles of energy to become mesmerized
by their incredible personalities.
While in Orlando, I boarded with an owner of a Jack Russell puppy named
Daisy. Daisy would occasionally give me the privilege of her company in
bed. Daytime I watched with fascination as Daisy played tug-of-war with
anybody and anything. Slowly over the winter of 1983, I became a convert
and a devoted fan of the Jack Russell Terrier.
Back
home in Ontario that spring, I began telling anyone who would listen
about these wonderful little terriers. There was only one person who
knew of this type of terrier, my friend Barb. Barb's sister owned a Jack
Russell Terrier bitch named Asti who happened to be in whelp. The only
hitch was that her sister lived in Des Moines, Iowa. The thought of
flying a dog in those days never occurred to me. As luck would have it,
sisters travel to keep in touch. so that fall I acquired my first Jack
Russell Terrier puppy, a "puddin" named Pepper. Pepper came with a four
generation pedigree, rather uncommon in those days, and naturally I
assumed she was "special". Well, she was special as a bed companion, a
farm dog for hunting rats and the occasional groundhog which she located
on the farm. BUT she was far from the ideal build which is outlined in
the Jack Russell Terrier Club of Canada or America's Breed Standard,
which I was quite ignorant of. I loved her just the same!
My
life as a single working woman was hectic for several years, and it was
not until 1990 that I acquired by first truly correct JRT, registered
with the JRTCA as "The Hollow Gringo". Gringo who was added to my
then two bitches, for a total of three. Upon arriving home, Gringo bred
one of my females which mating produced Conquest Cory. Cory has a number
of Conformation wins to her credit, with perhaps the most
outstanding being "Best Canadian Bred Bitch" at the first Canadian
Nationals. To Gringo and "The Hollow Terriers" I owe a debt of gratitude
for leading me down the right trail and teaching me how to hunt.
Always the gentleman and a ham, Gringo educated many uninformed,
prospective purchasers, who after a visit with Gringo wanted to purchase
a terrier JUST LIKE GRINGO. From a valued "Pet" to a "Show Dog", to a
"Working Terrier", Gringo excelled in every area. He became the first
JRT in Canada to be awarded the coveted JRTCA Bronze Medallion for
Special Merit in the Field. At 5 1/2 years of age, Gringo won
"Conformation Champion and Best Working Terrier at Windfields Farm, a
sanctioned JRTCC Trial. This was my first "Best Working Terrier" win and
to have won it with Gringo was especially rewarding, for it was an
awarded to a terrier who truly
deserved this honour.
Through Gringo, my passion for field work grew fast and furious. Every
spare moment was spent scouring for "active earths". Every terrier I
owned was educated in the area of natural earth work. My basic breeding
stock resulted from good earth workers who were also conformationally
correct and competitive at trials in conformation. After all "form
follows function". It took time to build up a group of terriers who
suited my high standards. Gradually, I assembled a kennel of happy,
enthusiastic, earth working Jack Russell Terriers. They have many JRTCC/JRTCA
National Champion/Bests to their credit as well as having earned many
more Bronze Medallions for Special Merit in the field.
I
feel very privileged to have stumbled upon the greatest canine of all,
the Jack Russell Terrier. I take great pride in helping to shape the
destiny of this terrier and keeping the original purpose of the terrier
in mind, EARTH WORK!
